Today we're taking a look at The Church of El Pulpo Mecanico, a mutant vehicle that burst onto the Burning Man scene in 2011. Designed by kinetic artist Duane Flatmo, El Pulpo Mecanico is a giant metal octopus that shoots flames out of its head and its eight tentacles through a system that can be played like a percussion instrument. El Pulpo Mecanico has humble beginnings with its parts originating from Flatmo's local salvage yard. This mutant vehicle shows the ingenuity of human spirit in the way that a hodgepodge mix of pieces became a dazzling spectacle bringing joy to Flatmo's community.
