All in Controversial

REPOST: Slate Star Codex (Scott Alexander), "BLACK PEOPLE LESS LIKELY"

The eight points above add up to a likelihood that black people will probably be underrepresented in a lot of weird subculturey nonconformist things. This is not a firm law – black people will be overrepresented in a few weird subculturey nonconformist things that are an especially good fit for their culture – but overall I think the rule holds. And that’s a big problem.

In Defense of Filming Crime

So I say we should be ashamed of the crime rates and apartheid of St. Louis, where this man managed to murder and walk the streets for hours. We should be more ashamed of the media that pushes this content on us. And we should be even more ashamed of the social media that prioritizes clicks over mental health, wanting us to see content we explicitly do not want to see, just because it gets a reaction. We should never shame the bystandards of horror for their natural reactions. After all, most of us would do the same.

REPOST: Eric Schmidt, "Why Technology Will Define the Future of Geopolitics"

If necessity is the mother of invention, war is the midwife of innovation. Speaking to Ukrainians on a visit to Kyiv in the fall of 2022, I heard from many that the first months of the war were the most productive of their lives. The United States’ last truly global war—World War II—led to the widespread adoption of penicillin, a revolution in nuclear technology, and a breakthrough in computer science. Now, the United States must innovate in peacetime, faster than ever before. By failing to do so, it is eroding its ability to deter—and, if necessary, to fight and win—the next war.

Moments in Time -- a Rant

… And so, 'next Monday’ typically means ‘this Monday.’ If you wanted to say “next Monday” as I mean it, you’d have to say “the following Monday,” pretending not to care that “next” means “the following.” We are burdened by societies’ inability to differentiate “this” and “next.” But if you really want to prevent confusion, just say “the following Monday, the ninth.” In this case, proximity and day of week are relevant, and we forget the number.

I left my job and took a long break... and I dont know the consequences of it

I was at my favorite park, Charles Klor, where I often played frisbee with random Jews and Arabs. And, of course, my dog, Naya. Charles Klor is a place where different cultures converge. It splits Jaffa and Tel Aviv propper. Across from it is a large mosque, and it’s common to see people break Ramadan in the park after. Today, the city was setting up stations, stages and more, for a Women’s Run. Workers aside, it was empty. Tons of room for my dog and I to play. As my beautiful, fluffy girl ran from bird flock to bird flock, all I could of was our mutual bliss. Unadulterated by thoughts of work obligations and life stresses.

Ukraine & USA's Massive Cyber Failures

Russian authoritarians are already acting to remove social media and similar tools from Russian states. They know the damage that will come if US simply had Facebook add a banner demanding protest in Saint Petersburg and Moscow. Massive corporations like Meta and Twitter are not Nato or US. Rather, they are an amazing tool we will soon lose. The US needs to be creative to act without the reprecussions of shooting missiles on Russian or Ukranian soil. Time is of the essence.
